A collection of my articles & musings on a host of topics.
Fewer Babies, Later Babies, Lost Babies: The Shrinking American Family
"Whatever happened to the American family? As families keep getting smaller—and rarer—society is increasingly structured against big families. What are Christians to do?"
Audits Before Autopsies: The Leftward Drift of Wheaton College
"We want the Wheaton that is captivated by the beauty of the gospel, where the faith—the true faith, once and for all delivered to the saints—is integrated with learning, not with novel interpretations of Scripture and subversion under the guise of diversity."
Of Men and Women: Who Shall Protect the President? Meeting The Minimum is Not Good Enough
"Can we get serious about the differences between men and women? Who is it that occupies the top echelon of elite fighters in our military? Men or women? Who are the greatest combat sports fighters on the planet? Men or women? Who do you want protecting the president?"
A Life Not Wasted
"He finally found a way – he sold himself into slavery in order to preach the gospel to them."
Sin is Poison - Not a ‘Mistake'
"Don’t you see what happens? The milder you make your label, the more dangerous you make your poison."
5 Ways to Honor Veterans in Your Church
November 11 is Veterans Day. We’ve set this national holiday aside to commemorate all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, not to be confused with Memorial Day, which honors all who have died during their service.
Valiant for Truth and the Word of God
"Let a man have one of these blades, with a hand to wield it and skill to use it, and he may venture upon an angel with it. He need not fear its holding, if he can but tell how to lay on. Its edges will never blunt. It will cut flesh and bones, and soul and spirit, and all."
Spurgeon on the Doctrine of Election
"I believe the doctrine of election, because I am quite certain that, if God had not chosen me, I should never have chosen Him."
2 Peter in the Canon at the Council of Nicaea
This paper was originally presented at the 2018 Covenant Theological Seminary's annual theology conference. That paper was then revised and used in the Midwest Evangelical Theological Society's 2018 meeting where it received a runner-up in the student paper competition.
The Other Side of IVF: What do we do with Leftover Embryos?
"Between 1987 and 2015, approximately one million children were born through the use of IVF or other reproductive technologies averaging about 62,000 children per year. Seeking to fulfill the desire to have children is laudable impulse though the means have come into question."
What’s the difference between ‘Church Planting', ‘Replanting' and ‘Revitalization’?
"A church plant is building a house from the ground up - laying the foundation, adding the structures, piping, electrical and so on. Replanting is akin to gutting an older house to remodel it. The foundation remains intact as does much of the skeleton of the home but the plaster walls are taken out, the electoral is updated, and new windows and roof are installed. And lastly, revitalization is making only minimal changes to the house. A paint job, new appliances, and fixing older plumbing and electrical rather than replacing it, but the vast majority of the house remains as it was before."
Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Plagiarizing Sermons
"They all went to this bookshop and bought the various books. The tendency was, naturally, for all to buy the same books, and the result was that many of them were preaching the same sermon!"
Spurgeon on Christian Deconstruction
This excerpt is from Spurgeon's small and final manifesto, "The Greatest Fight in the World." As it strikes me, it is an apt critique of what "Christian Deconstructionists" and the so called, "ex-vangelical" moment is guilty of.
What Memorial Day teaches us about Jesus’ sacrifice
Today, we celebrate Memorial Day. This national holiday is often accompanied by time off from work, barbecues in the backyard, and, of course, the local furniture store’s savings. But there is more to Memorial Day than a burger, a flag, and a day off.
Veteran Suicide and the Mission of the Church
"There’s more than ample evidence that this narrative, this combat-PTSD-suicide chain, is mistaken. What’s more, if we assume suicide is mostly related to combat and PTSD, we may fail to help those most in need."
Throwback Thursday - The Canon of Scripture: A Conversation with Michael Kruger
A recovered episode from the old podcast featuring a conversation with Michael Kruger on the canon of Scripture. Though the topic may sound academic, this article shows why the origins and reliability of the biblical canon matter deeply for everyday Christian living, apologetics, and faithful witness.
Do You Love the Holy Spirit?
"As Christians, we are confessing Trinitarians. This means we profess that the Bible teaches there are three distinct persons in one God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But practically speaking, many of us are probably more bi-nitarian than we care to admit."
